Tartu Conference on East European and Eurasian Studies to Feature Innovative Research by Vasil Navumau and Colleagues

The Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies and the Centre for Eurasian and Russian Studies (CEURUS) at the University of Tartu are set to host the Eighth Annual Tartu Conference on East European and Eurasian Studies on June 20-21, 2024. This year’s theme, "Area Studies in Crisis? In Search of New Approaches in East European and Eurasian Studies," promises to bring forth pioneering research amidst critical reflections on the discipline's future.

Among the accepted papers, noteworthy contributions come from Vasil Navumau and his team, whose research addresses pressing contemporary issues. Navumau, in collaboration with Ryhor Nizhnikau and Oleksii Kolesnykov, will present their paper titled "Decentralised Media Response of Ukraine to Russia’s Aggression: Structures, Cases, and Narratives." This study explores the adaptive strategies of Ukrainian media in response to external aggressions, highlighting the dynamic nature of modern conflict communication. The research was supported by Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Additionally, another of Navumau's papers, co-authored with Tatiana Gorokhova and Olga Matveieva, "Cross-National Perspectives: Exploring the Perception of Migration in Australia and Germany Among Ukrainian Youth," has also been accepted. This paper delves into the perceptions and experiences of Ukrainian youth regarding migration, offering valuable insights into the socio-political factors influencing young migrants.

The 2024 Tartu Conference is particularly significant given the ongoing geopolitical tensions and the need to reassess academic frameworks within East European and Eurasian studies. The event aims to address these challenges by encouraging a reevaluation of colonial legacies, exploring diverse methodologies, and promoting an inclusive dialogue that respects academic freedom.

As the field stands at a crossroads, the contributions from researchers like Navumau and his colleagues are crucial for forging new pathways and understanding the complex narratives that shape this region. The conference will include a variety of academic panels, roundtables on current issues, and a plenary session, concluding with a conference dinner.
